Split into three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Baja. The climates are moderated by the Atlantic Ocean, with protection from the Cantabrian mountains. Tempranillo dominates the region, with other varieties such as Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano.
